Shapeshifters: Exploring and Affirming Gender Diversity through Art and Stories In-Person
Using beautiful pictures and intimate, personal language, the book "Shapeshifters" tells the stories of seven artists who share their gender explorations 'beyond the binary.'
Using the book as a jumping off point, this workshop will provide folks the opportunity to discuss their journey with gender, both for ourselves and with significant people in our lives. A special emphasis will be on how we can support folks who identify as nonbinary, queer, and trans.
A Powerpoint imbedded with short videos created from the book will be shown, which we'll use as a jumping off point for discussion.
Discussion will be facilitated by Van Cleary-Hammarstedt. Cleary-Hammarstedt studied gender and nonviolence at Syracuse University, where he completed a PhD study which was based on interviews with men involved in pro-feminist men’s groups across the country. In addition to academia, he’s worked in the human services: coordinating the batterer's intervention program Alternatives at Vera House, implementing school based youth violence prevention, promoting interracial dialogues to end racism, providing support to people with mental illness, and more.
